Finance definition – Bonds 101 [Debt Financing] HELP. EASY 10 POINTS GUARANTEED!?

Finance definition Question by : Bonds 101 [Debt Financing] HELP. EASY 10 POINTS GUARANTEED!?
have a test soon and need your help guys. have a couple of questions you guys don’t mind answering for me. answer all questions (as thorough as possible) to get 10 points.

1) How does a bond work exactly…I mean, the bond is an IOU..which is the principal (par value) + the cost (contract rate) of using the money… so as the bondholder, do I pay fixed, installment payments..but here is where I get lost…at the point of maturity, or full repayment, conceptually speaking how much does the bondholder get back? …does it depend on the market value (rate) of the bond? …like what’s the general equation for maturity of a bond…= par value x contract rate x annual period? is that all ….wouldn’t that be constant..basically, there’s no return or gain…? im lost.

2) second easy question. bonds can be issued at par (given contract rate = market rate), at discount (contract rate < market rate), or at premium (contract rate > market rate)…I understand the meaning of these words…but what does it mean in real terms…what does this translate into/mean both as an issuer and bondholder ….

will i (as an issuer) have a higher interest expense if the bond is issued at a discount? …and the bondholder gets a higher return?…or vis versa…

3) third and lastly, what in the world is “amortization”? … tried looking up the etymological definition…for the life of me, i still cannot make sense of it.

PLEASE HELP ME, I WILL GREATLY REWARD YOU WITH 10 POINTS !!!!!!!! :) …ONLY FAIR, RIGHT?

Stock – How do capital gains work for transferred stock?

Stock

Stock Question by stephymarie13: How do capital gains work for transferred stock?
I received IBM stock as a gift from my grandmother (under the taxable gift amount). We cashed the stock in shortly after. When we went to have our taxes prepared, we were told we would need the cost basis from when my grandmother purchased the stock. When I called IBM, they told me I would only need the cost from the date of transfer. Who is accurate?

Best answer:

Answer by tro
since it was gift to you, your basis is 0
had you inherited the stock the basis at the transfer would be effective but you say this is a gift, and I don’t know anyone who pays for a gift (other than Jesus Christ)

Money Crisis – If banks create money out of thin air when they loan people money- why did the sub-prime crisis matter?

Money Crisis Question by BritishMale: If banks create money out of thin air when they loan people money- why did the sub-prime crisis matter?
If all money is debt, and it is created as and when they feel/can- surely it would be no loss when sub-prime mortgages cannot be paid back?
Banks get original deposits from the fed and Government, but as stated in the Federal Reserve publication “Modern Money Mechanics” it is explained that the deposits put in banks by Government and the Federal Reserve “Of course banks do not actually use this money to create loans,”. Electric money (which accounts for 97% of the money in circulation in the USA) is deposited into their respective accounts and in reality is very very rarely withdrawn.

The contracts alone act as sufficient money for trading, as banks are 99% of the time going to get their money back, and so the conversion of these contracts to legal tender is enough to increase the money supply.

Don’t correct people on a system you don’t understand yourselves.

Answer by Steve D
Banks do not create money out of thin air – the money lent out is based upon the amount of deposits a bank has less the required reserve. For example…Bank A has $ 1 million in savings deposits from customers and the Fed requires a 10% reserve…the bank deposits $ 100K with the Fed in its reserve account and can lend out the other $ 900K. The bank makes money on the interest spread, which is the interest made on the $ 900K in loans less the interest paid on the $ 1 million in deposits and overhead (bank buildings, salaries, etc.).

Let’s say that in our example, someone with a $ 100,000 sub-prime mortgage defaults…The bank now has assets of $ 900K (800K in remaining “good” loans plus $ 100K in reserves) to cover the $ 1 million in deposits. Not a good situation if everyone showed up one day and withdrew their money.
